Development Services - Current Projects
KCC along with its consortium partners have been awarded two major research projects by the European Commision to provide man-machine-interfaces and software development services. KCC was chosen as a partner of choice for these projects due to its expertise at developing innovative and practical solutions to varying business problems. Tank Inspect Large above ground storage tanks filled with hazardous liquids such as oil, oil derived products, chemicals and food processing liquids are in widespread use in Europe and indeed throughout the world. Leakage from corroded storage tanks, especially their floors, is a major environmental, economic and safety hazard. Current methods of detecting corrosion externally are inadequate. The only viable way is to empty the tank, which has its own hazards and drawbacks. To overcome the drawbacks of current inspection methods, the consortium proposes to develop new and novel ultrasonic guided wave (UGW) techniques, sensors and systems for finding defects and corrosion in internal tank floor plates without the need to empty and clean the tank. For its part, KCC will design, develop, test and deploy the man-machine-interfaces and provide on-going software devlopment skills. Pipescan Over 10 million kilometres of pipelines in Europe carry hazardous fluids. These include oil, oil products, chemicals such as solvents, caustics, acids, corrosives and combustibles and gases, often at high pressure and temperature. These pipelines are subjected to corrosion by the environment and by the contents. Other defects in pipes are caused by mechanical fatigue. The inspection of a great majority of pipes is mandatory to ascertain their structural integrity, as failure to inspect can result in leakage of hazardous material into the environment and even explosion. Up to 90% of these pipelines are inaccessible for inspection by current inspection methods because they are:
The consortium propose to develop a set of mechanised inspection techniques, sensors and systems for finding defects and corrosion in inaccessible pipe (i.e. pipes buried underground, in concrete, in water or covered with insulation) without the need to "dig up" or remove coatings. For its part, KCC will design, develop, test and deploy the man-machine-interfaces and provide on-going software devlopment skills.
